West Media Group is led by Tamekia Ashford Nixon, a communications executive who has built a career delivering impactful results for more than 20 years.
As the Detroit Health Department Director of Communications, Tamekia was instrumental in establishing the department’s communications amid Detroit’s historic bankruptcy in 2013. She managed all public relations, crisis management, and marketing efforts while serving as a crucial liaison with the mayor’s office to ensure cohesive, powerful messaging across city departments. Her work didn’t just inform—it inspired and unified, promoting health and wellness for Detroit’s residents during a challenging period.
During her career, she had the opportunity to serve as Vice President of Marketing for the Detroit Regional Partnership, a leading economic development nonprofit serving the 11-county Detroit Region. In this role, she built from scratch the marketing department and blueprint to promote the region to potential investors as one of the most innovative and diverse areas in the country.
Tamekia has directed messaging for high-stakes initiatives, including two congressional campaigns and the White House’s Affordable Care Act community engagement efforts.
She also directed integrated marketing campaigns, advocacy and guided healthcare and mental health solutions in the nation’s capital.
Her experience spans a diverse portfolio: she’s enhanced campaigns for global brands like McDonald's, contributed to numerous PR firms, and provided dedicated PR support for Detroit City Council, Molina Healthcare and Chrysler (known today as Stellantis).
Tamekia has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work and is a graduate of the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Leadership Detroit Program.
